"Humor in Fantastic Literature"



This 75 minute presentation will deal with the subject of humor in fantastic
literature and other subgenres, namely dystopic science fiction and
detective fiction. The proposed model will briefly be applied to an Edgar
Allan Poe's short story. Then, two Margaret Atwood's novels and a Douglas
Glover's short story will also be analyzed. While Atwood's novels The
Handmaid's Tale and her most recent Oryx and Crake belong to the dystopic
science fiction genre, Glover's work, especially his short stories, mostly
deals with altered states of conscience, often bordering on the
fantastic. Both these Canadian writers will finely serve to underline some
aspects of Anglo-Canadian literature.
